Australian teachers and parents will encourage students to do things but they won't force them to do it. If the child really doesn't want to do something then they don't get made to do it. Of course it depends on the parents how much pressure they put on the child."

I think that because Australia is so laid-back, parents don't really pressure their kids to succeed like they might do in Japan. Of course Aussie parents want their children to do well, but they leave it up to their kids to decide what they want to do. I think most parents put the emphasis on their kids being happy and personal success rather than on pushing them to be the best of the best."

There is a big difference in discipline between the two countries. I think that it's important to have a balance. Of course if they are going to be upset about going then let them stay home, but it's important to not let it happen too often. Don't let them over indulge. I think that Japanese students are under too much stress because they study very often. Parents should be more understanding as well as being strict."
